contemporary and traditional ceramics
The Pottery is situated in a typical 19th century Edinburgh tenement, on the northern fringe of the New Town. Originally a bakery, this has always been a workplace –useful when setting up a pottery in a residential area.

Janet Adam established the Pottery in 1983 as her own workshop, letting out surplus space initially to various other makers. However, for the past 20 years or so everyone has been involved in ceramics. A constant stream of people from many parts of the world have spent anything from a few weeks to several years here – whether as amateur potters, newly-launched graduates or as well-established makers coming to live in Edinburgh.

While working independently, both in the creative and business sense, there is a continuous communal interest and support in each-other’s enterprises.

In the gallery the range and diversity of work by the current residents gives a real insight into some of the many different ways of working with clay. Visitors are welcome to look round the workshops, see work in progress or discuss commissions , making The Adam Pottery a real ceramic centre.
